Bishop Gets Life Imprisonment For Raping His Assistant

Oluwafeyiropo Daniels, a Lagos cleric, has got convicted by a Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court of raping his assistant pastor.

Justice Rahman Oshodi found Daniels, the Bishop of I Reign Christian Ministry, guilty of rape and therefore sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Oshodi held that prosecution established the ingredients of the offence, stating that Daniels was a liar and did not have any regard for truth.

The judge, however, discharged and acquitted him on the count two of the charge, which is rape of another member of the church (name withheld).

Oshodi held that there was an element of consent from the church member.

Daniels faced an amended four-count charge bordering on rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.

NLC To FG: You Have Till October 27 To Meet Workers’ Demands

The Federal Government was Thursday given until October 27 to address workers’ demands, with warning of possible nationwide action should negotiations fail. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued the mandate in a statement signed by Benson Upah, its Acting General-Secretary, Abuja after a meeting between the Federal Government and organised labour ended without resolution. Upah said the meeting, convened at the Ministry of Labour in Abuja, ended in a deadlock. Said he: “Regrettably, the government delegation came unprepared and without the necessary mandates to engage substantively on these issues. “No concrete commitments were secured, and the outstanding issues remain unresolved. “However, we urge all affiliates of NLC, all State Councils and our civil society allies to be alert and start mobilising for possible action across the nation while we hope that our demands are met by the government”. He said the meeting was adjourned until October 27, at the request of the Minister of Labour to enable the government assemble relevant Ministers and Heads of Fepartments and Agencies for further discussions. Upah said the NLC’s demands included a reduction in petrol prices to 2024 levels, renegotiation of the national minimum wage and implementation of agreed tax relief measures. He added that the demands also included implementation of the Terms of Settlement reached with the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals (JOHESU), as well as the demands of the Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council (JPSNC). Upah disclosed that outstanding issues under the JPSNC demands included peculiar allowances, wage awards and hazard allowances. He said the NLC remained committed to dialogue but would not accept indefinite delays, adding that its relevant organs would determine the next line of action if no meaningful progress was made at Tuesday’s meeting. Upah urged Nigerian workers and the general public to remain calm and resolute, expressing hope that at the next meeting, the government would address the demands.

‘Ministers Pay Billions For Their Appointments’ – APC Campaign Spokesman

Alwan Hassan. An allegation Thursday emerged that many Ministers in Nigeria pay billions of Naira to secure appointments. Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, leveled this allegation while responding to questions in an interview on Arise TeleVision’s ‘Prime Time‘. He said the practice was not new nor was not limited to the APC administration. Claimed Hassan: “A lot of Ministers pay billions to be appointed, and the first thing they think of is how to recoup that money after being appointed. “It is the truth about our country and not just APC ministers; it started before the APC”. Hassan said the culture of paying for appointments was one of the major reasons for corruption in public office, as appointees saw public service as an investment that must yield returns.

FIFA Okays Normalisation Committee For NFF Till May 2027

FIFA Thursday announced approval of plans to institute a normalisation committee for running the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until May 2027. This was contained in a letter to the NFF’s interim leadership where FIFA said it would, in conjunction with CAF, appoint committee members “as soon as possible”. Read the letter: “The period during which the normalisation committee shall perform its functions shall expire as soon as it has fulfilled all of its tasks, but by no later than 31 May 2027″. The NFF is expected to hold new elections before the committee’s tenure expires. None of the panel members will be eligible for the positions to be filled in the elections. Pending the appointment of the committee members, Emmanuel Ikpeme, the NFF acting general-secretary, will continue to manage the Federation’s affairs. FIFA officials visited Nigeria in September to confirm the absence of government influence after most NFF executives resigned in August. Ibrahim Gusau, NFF president, and Mohammed Sanusi, the general-secretary, both resigned after pressure over disappointing performances by various national teams. Shortly after the exits, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered a “comprehensive reform” of Nigerian football to “overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments”.
