Police Officer Nabbed For Impersonation In JAMB UTME

A serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force has been arrested for examination malpractice. The officer, Etim Israel, was nabbed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for engaging an impostor to write his 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Israel, a Police Constable in the Akwa Ibom State Command reportedly registered for the exam with his name but employed a mercenary to sit for the exam, who reportedly used his original picture and other biometric details for the fraudulent endeavour.

The Policeman confessed to having applied to study Fishery at the Akwa Ibom State University in the 2020 UTME, but paid N30, 000 to the mercenary who is now at large to sit for the exam as he was away on special duties.

Israel said after scoring over 240 in the exam and decided to commence the admissions process, he was told that he won’t sail through because of the disparity in the picture, which prompted him to visit JAMB’s office for correction, a move that landed him in trouble.

Said Israel: “I went to their (JAMB) office to change my picture when they told me (in Akwa Ibom) that I won’t be able to use the result because of the picture”.

The Police Constable in an emotion-laden voice appealed to JAMB to temper justice with mercy, promising to help the Board in investigating issues of impersonation in UTME.

Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who said Israel would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, expressed concern over the antics of some candidates who circumvent water-tight measures used in checking impersonation.

Said he: “When some candidates complain that they have registered for our examination but could not be verified on the day of examination, many do not grasp the full import of their claims as such candidates, who are more often than not impersonators, expect to be allowed to enter the examination hall without undergoing necessary searches.

“However, in the last UTME, the Board introduced the taking of a snapshot of the candidate who claims they could not be verified and comparing the new picture with the one in our database.

The JAMB Registrar, however, assured candidates who had genuine verification challenges during the 2020 UTME, that the Board would fix a new date for them to write the exam.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu got sent an admonition against excessive reliance on borrowing to finance infrastructure projects. Asiwaju Busari Shaamsuddeen Akande, a Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration, offered this advice,  urging the Federal Government to adopt asset-backed financing and public-private partnerships.  Akande said Nigeria’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030 could be undermined if the government continued accumulating debts without ensuring that infrastructure investments generated sufficient economic returns.  His warning came amid Tinubu’s renewed moves to secure additional external loans to finance government projects.  In an assessment of the country’s economic direction, the expert said the government must look beyond the volume of infrastructure being constructed and determine how quickly such investments could translate into industrial output, increased business activities and government revenue.  He noted that borrowing heavily for projects with long gestation periods could create a mismatch between immediate debt-servicing obligations and the time required for the investments to generate returns.  Argued Akande: “Nigeria should reduce its dependence on conventional borrowing by exploring Public-Private Partnerships and sovereign Sukuk financing”.  He said these funding arrangements would allow private investors to participate in infrastructure development while sharing the associated commercial risks.  Akande also warned that high government borrowing costs could discourage commercial banks from lending to businesses, as financial institutions might prefer investing in government securities offering attractive returns.  The financial expert further argued that infrastructure projects must be linked to industrial and agricultural production centres to ensure that local businesses, particularly small and medium-scale enterprises, benefit from the investments.  He said the government should establish mechanisms for directing part of the revenue generated by infrastructure projects towards reducing public debt.  Akande, a Certified Islamic Finance Executive, maintained that the success of the $1 trillion economic target would depend not merely on the scale of government spending “but on the productivity of investments, equitable access to economic opportunities and effective management of public debt”.

  EFCC Busts ‘Chinese Behind Illegal Refinery’ In Ogun

  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered an illegal oil refinery allegedly operated by Chinese nationals in Ogere, Ogun State. The Commission made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday, by Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, who said the refinery was discovered during an operation conducted by operatives of the agency’s Lagos zonal directorate 2 on October 31.  Oyewale said the operation followed intelligence-gathering and surveillance on the activities of suspected illegal sludge oil refiners.  He added that the refinery was deserted when operatives arrived at the premises.  The discovery followed an earlier operation in which the Commission shut down four illegal lithium processing plants in the area.  Read the statement: “However, waste products from the refining process were discovered at the location.  “During the raid, underground tanks believed to have been used for heating and processing the sludge oil were also discovered.  “Two of the underground tanks inspected contained substances suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise known as diesel”.  The EFCC spokesperson added that preliminary investigations showed that the operators sourced sludge oil, also called black sludge, from Warri, Delta State, and Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, before transporting it to the facility in Ogere for processing.  He stated that the operators subjected the sludge oil to intense heat, allowing lighter petroleum components to pass through a series of chambers and filters in a process believed to produce diesel for sale in the Nigerian market.  Oyewale said security personnel at the facility told investigators that the Chinese operators never disclosed their identities or the name of the company behind the refinery.  He said operatives had taken over the premises as investigations continued to establish the identities of the operators, ownership of the facility and the extent of the suspected illegal activities.

  Datti-Baba Ahmed Threatens Obi…I’ll Reveal More Dirts If Obidients Continue To Attack Me

  Datti Baba-Ahmed.  Datti-Baba Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party (LP)  vice-presidential candidate, will make further damaging revelations about the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if his supporters continue  attacking him over his comments on the former Anambra State governor.  Baba-Ahmed issued the warning while reacting to the backlash that followed his claim that Obi and his proposed running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, might struggle to secure support in northern Nigeria.  Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, the former vice-presidential candidate said his position was informed by his personal experience of the challenges Obi faced in gaining acceptance among northern voters during the 2023 presidential campaign.  He expressed concern that some supporters of  Obi, popularly known as Obidients, were quick to attack people who expressed opinions contrary to theirs.  Said he: “First, these people (Obidients) are always eager to attack. I said it is very unlikely that the North will support Peter Obi, very unlikely, because I know what I have faced”.  Baba-Ahmed recalled that shortly after joining  Obi on the Labour Party presidential ticket in 2022, he had to contend with allegations that the former Governor’s administration in Anambra State discriminated against northerners by requiring them to carry identification cards.  He also cited controversies surrounding the demolition of a mosque in Anambra State and a leaked telephone conversation between Obi and the founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, in which the former Governor repeatedly addressed the cleric as “Yes Daddy”.  Baba-Ahmed said the controversies created difficulties for the Labour Party’s campaign in northern communities, forcing him to work to counter the allegations and mobilise support for  Obi.  He questioned how Kwankwaso, who reportedly confronted Obi over the allegations of discrimination against northerners during a visit to Anambra State, would explain the issues to voters in Kano.  Stated he: “I wonder how Kwankwaso, who flew from Kano to Anambra to go and challenge Peter Obi: ‘Why are you driving (out northerners from your state)?’ You know that kind of thing. How will he now go to Kano and contradict himself, ‘No, no, no, it is not what happened?’”  Baba-Ahmed said he personally took Obi’s campaign to several northern locations, including Borno, Kano and Zaria, to address the controversies and market the former Governor to voters.  Said he: “I smuggled him to Borno, to the Caliphate, to Kano, to Zaria to market him. So I sorted that problem of ID card, mosque demolition, ‘Yes Daddy’”.  He maintained that the controversies surrounding the 2023 campaign could still affect  Obi’s acceptance in the North, insisting that his assessment of the region’s likely response to an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket remained unchanged.  The former vice-presidential candidate, however, warned Obi’s supporters against directing further attacks at him, saying he had more damaging information he could disclose.  Cautioned he: “They (Obidients) shouldn’t start that nonsense with me that they will start attacking me because I have more damaging things to say”.
