Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) may have altered the political dynamics in the State, weakening the influence of the camp loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Austin Tam-George, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, made this suggestion, stating that political calculations in the State within the last three weeks had changed.

He firther noted that the development appeared to have unsettled Wike and his allies.

Speaking during the Arise Television’s Prime Time, the ex-Commissioner stated that it was why Wike in recent weeks embarked on visits to several Local Government Areas in the State.

Tam-George said the Governor’s defection eroded the leverage previously enjoyed by the Wike camp over the Rivers State Government, forcing them to seek new ways of reasserting their influence.

He, however, warned that the prolonged political tension and instability resulting from the rivalry would ultimately be detrimental to the State and its people.

Said Tam-George: “The movement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to APC in the last 21 days has changed the political calculation in Rivers State.

“You know, in the past two weeks or so, the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, has been going from Local Government Area to another Local Government Area, threatening the government of Rivers State, even insulting the leadership structures of the APC at some point.

“He even accused some senior leaders and the Tinubu administration of going to Rivers State to literally accept, take money or bribes, also from the Rivers State government.

“So what I think is happening is that the defection of the Governor has obviously threatened the original leverage that the Wike’s camp had over the Governor, and they are finding a way to look for a way of asserting what they thought might be a threat to their leverage.

“But the regret is that it is the State ultimately that suffers from this kind of instability”.

    The need for stronger protection of telecommunications infrastructure, was Tuesday highlighted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) with a warning that the growing sophistication of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven cyber attacks pose increasing risks to Nigeria’s digital economy and national security.  Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, made this call at the second International Cybersecurity Conference (ICSC), held in Abuja.  Maida said telecommunications infrastructure had become central to Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting financial transactions, communications, public services and business operations, making its protection critical to national security.,  He said AI had significantly increased the sophistication, speed and scale of cyber attacks, requiring stronger digital defences, improved security infrastructure and closer collaboration among regulators, telecommunications operators and security agencies.  The conference was held under the theme, “Cyber Resilience in the Age of AI: Defending Minds, Networks and Nation”.  Maida said cyber resilience extended beyond preventing attacks to building the capacity to anticipate, withstand and recover from disruptions while ensuring the continuity of essential services and economic activities, was essential.  He identified emerging threats to include AI-driven phishing, automated credential attacks, deepfakes designed to bypass authentication systems and malware capable of modifying itself to evade detection.  He cited recent international cybersecurity incidents involving attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems in France and spyware targeting journalists and media personnel in the Middle East as examples underscoring the need for stronger digital defences.  Section 4 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, he said, mandates the Commission to protect consumer rights, safeguard national interests and promote the safety and efficiency of communications infrastructure.  To strengthen the sector’s response, Maida said the NCC had established its Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) to monitor threats, facilitate intelligence-sharing and coordinate responses to cybersecurity incidents across the telecommunications sector.  He added that the Commission’s cyber resilience framework for the Nigerian communications sector provided common security standards for licensed operators and strengthened coordination with the national Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT).  Maida identified three critical areas for strengthening cyber resilience: raising cybersecurity awareness to protect human minds, securing networks through robust security architecture, and promoting national defence through collaboration among regulators, telecommunications operators, financial institutions and security agencies.  He urged telecommunications operators to adopt Zero Trust Architecture, which requires continuous verification of users and systems, and to assess AI models integrated into network operations regularly for vulnerabilities.  The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, said digital development and national security could no longer be treated as separate priorities.  Ribadu, who was represented by Prof. Gerald Ilukwe of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), said AI offered opportunities to strengthen cyber defences but could also enable criminals  develop sophisticated scams, clone voices and spread false information.  He urged Nigerians to verify identities and authenticate suspicious requests before taking action. ...

    Israel: Netanyahu Faces Eisenkot Challenge In Pivotal Election As Citizens Vote

    INEC Addresses AI-Generated Photos Issue In Voters’ Register, Says Clean-up In Progress

    Amid public concerns over suspected Artificial Intelligence-generated photographs in the database of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Commission has explained that the preliminary register of voters published on its website contains the original records displayed physically across the country earlier in October,   The Commission said the online register, published on October 26, 2026, did not reflect all on-going efforts to identify and correct questionable registration records flagged during the physical display exercise.  INEC also said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and would take appropriate action based on verified findings.  The clarification came after concerns emerged on social media over photographs suspected to have been generated using Artificial Intelligence appearing in the preliminary register of voters.  In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the register published online was the same preliminary register displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15.  The exercise was part of the Commission’s Display, Claims and Objections process, which allows voters and other members of the public to scrutinise the register and report inaccuracies or irregularities before the final register is certified.  Read the statement: “During the physical display, a number of questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination. The Commission commenced the process of reviewing these records and taking appropriate corrective action in accordance with established procedures”.  INEC explained that the online publication represented the original preliminary register and did not incorporate all the data-clean-up activities already underway.  It stressed that the preliminary register was not the final certified register, adding that the ongoing review process was designed to identify and correct irregularities before certification.  Said INEC: “The Display, Claims and Objections exercise is specifically intended to facilitate public scrutiny, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and enable appropriate corrections before certification”.  The Commission’s clarification suggests that the questionable records identified during the physical display had been flagged for further examination, although, it did not disclose the number of affected records or provide details of the suspected AI-generated photographs.  INEC also did not identify the source of the photographs or establish whether their appearance resulted from deliberate manipulation, technical errors or lapses in the registration process.  However, the Commission said it was examining the circumstances surrounding the photographs, including possible failures in its technical systems or administrative procedures.  It promised to take appropriate action after establishing the facts.  INEC welcomed the public scrutiny that brought the issue to attention, saying citizens and stakeholders had an important role to play in improving the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register.  The development has drawn attention to the importance of verifying voter registration records ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly as the Commission works to ensure that the final register is accurate and credible. ...
