Eagles-Bafana Encounter: NUSA Kicks Off Support Efforts In South-Africa

The leadership of the Nigerian community South-Africa has ahead of the Super Eagles World Cup qualifying clash against Bafana Bafana in that country commenced mobilisation efforts.

Mr. Smart Nwobi, the Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), president, said this in a statement on Sunday.

The crucial Group C encounter is scheduled for September 9 at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The statement, which was jointly signed by Nwobi and the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, was made available to the media in Abuja.

Nwobi said the group’s leaders would visit Bloemfontein as part of efforts to mobilise support for the national team.

Said he: “The leadership of NUSA will visit Bloemfontein ahead of this crucial World Cup qualifier to mobilise our people residing in the city.

“This game is important for our country, and we want Nigerians to come out en masse to support the Super Eagles”.

Nwobi further stressed that NUSA’s leadership would work closely with the Bloemfontein chapter to engage Nigerians living in the city at least a week before the match.

Added he: “We will also inform Nigerians to be law-abiding before and after the game.

”It is important that we maintain discipline at all times in any part of South Africa”.

The NUSA president gave an assurance that the Super Eagles could count on the unwavering support of Nigerians across South Africa during the encounter.

He recalled the strong turnout of Nigerian supporters in March when the country’s U-17 women’s national team faced South Africa.

The young Nigerian female side had emerged victorious in the encounter.

NUSA is the umbrella body representing Nigerians in South-Africa.

Visual Impairment Shouldn’t Be Barrier To Acquire Knowledge From Reading – Asein

Visual impairment should not deny victims equal participation, inclusion, access to knowledge acquired through reading, the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) has sued. This position was contained in a statement offered by the NCC director-general, Dr. John Asein on the occasion of White Cane Day 2026. The inability to read conventional print, he maintained, should never become a barrier to education, research, professional advancement, creativity or participation in our cultural and intellectual life. The theme for this year’s White Cane Day is “Promoting Independence, Inclusion and Equal Access for Persons Who Are Blind”. The full statement below: “The Nigerian Copyright Commission joins blind, visually impaired and otherwise print-disabled persons in Nigeria and across the world in commemorating White Cane Day 2026. “This year’s theme, ‘Promoting Independence, Inclusion and Equal Access for Persons Who Are Blind,’ is a timely reminder that the white cane is not only a mobility aid, but also a symbol of dignity, independence and the right to participate fully in society. “For the Commission, equal participation must include equal access to knowledge. The inability to read conventional print should never become a barrier to education, research, professional advancement, creativity or participation in our cultural and intellectual life. “The Copyright Act, 2022, particularly section 26, provides an important legal framework for addressing this challenge and gives effect to the principles of the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled. It permits the production and supply of accessible-format copies for beneficiary persons through authorised entities, subject to appropriate safeguards, and facilitates lawful cross-border exchange of such works. “The task before us is therefore to move decisively from legal provisions to practical access. To this end, the Commission is advancing the establishment of a National Accessible Book Portal as a major instrument for operationalising the provisions of the Copyright Act. The Portal is envisaged as a trusted national platform for identifying and facilitating access to books and other works available in accessible formats. “It will support authorised entities, improve the discoverability of accessible works, reduce unnecessary duplication and promote collaboration among authors, publishers, libraries, educational institutions, organisations of persons with disabilities and other stakeholders. “Importantly, the Portal is also intended to build trust across the copyright ecosystem. Authors, publishers and other right holders should have confidence that accessible-format copies will be produced and used transparently and in accordance with the law. At the same time, authorised entities and beneficiary persons should have a clear, efficient and predictable system through which accessible works can be identified and lawfully obtained. “The Commission also calls on authors and publishers to become active partners in expanding access. Books should, wherever practicable, be made available in accessible formats, rather than leaving persons with print disabilities to depend solely on subsequent conversion under statutory exceptions. “More importantly, the publishing industry should increasingly embrace the principle of “born accessible” publishing by designing and producing books and digital publications from the outset in formats compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies. This should become part of good publishing practice, not an afterthought. “The Commission’s current initiatives build upon its longstanding “Let the Blind Read” campaign and its continuing engagement with organisations of blind persons, authors, publishers, libraries, educational institutions, technology providers and development partners. Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed With Cancer A Surgeons Remove Part Of Lung – Vatican

Pope Leo XIV arrives Gemelli Hospital ahead of the pontiff’s surgery to remove a lung nodule, in Rome, Italy, October 13, 2026. Pope Leo VIX was Tuesday after surgeons removed a part of his right lung, diagnosed with lung cancer, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin, marking a significant health setback for the 71-year-old pontiff. The Pope has lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of cancer, with tissue ‌tests conducted during the operation confirming what doctors had suspected from preparatory examinations, the bulletin said. Leo was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Tuesday for surgery to remove the growth that doctors had discovered in a recent routine health check. The Pope’s lead surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, and his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, said in a statement that the procedure lasted about 90 minutes and was successful, with no complications. Said they: “In order to make the procedure curative, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique”, making clear that the aim was to eliminate all cancerous tissue. Human lungs have five lobes — three in the right lung and two in the left. A medical expert said that in ⁠order to assess the pope’s case they would need to know the size of the tumour and whether the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, information the Vatican did not immediately provide. Said Dr. Stephen Liu, a lung cancer expert at Georgetown University in Washington and division chief of hematology-oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital: “While we have the diagnosis, we do not yet have the stage. This is critical to prognosis and treatment. “If this is a small lung cancer with no lymph nodes involved, surgery itself is likely to be curative. But if final analysis reveals a greater extent of cancer involvement, this indicates a poorer prognosis”. The Vatican said earlier this week that he was expected to remain in hospital for about a week and all his public events have been cancelled until October 20. Leo left the Vatican ahead of the surgery shortly before 1:00 p.m. (1100 GMT) in Rome and was seen waving from the back of ‌a black SUV as his convoy drove about 9 km (5.6 miles) north of the Vatican to the Gemelli. Upon arrival at the hospital, Leo shook hands with several officials, walked in front of a waiting crowd of well-wishers, some of whom shouted ‘Auguri’ (best wishes), and headed in via the main entrance. Leo, elected by the world’s cardinals in May 2025, is relatively young for a Church leader. He enjoys sports, including tennis, and is not known to be a smoker or to have had recent health issues. The late Pope Francis, Leo’s predecessor, was hospitalised several times as he grew frail in his later years. He died aged 88 in April 2025. ...
