Gov. Umahi Gives Out 68 SUVs To Aides

Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. David Umahi has distributed among his aides 68 sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

While gving out the cars to them on Tuesday, Umahi said it was baffling to see some of his aides grumbling despite earning salaries and having new vehicles, reportedly pointing out that those castigating the system despite being a part of it were putting themselves in “a terrible spiritual situation”.

Said he: “Do you want to be like the people in the village? Everybody here, including myself, is privileged and we are not better than those not in this position. Nobody should take him or herself as a superstar, as you cannot be in the system and still be castigating it. Those who know what they are doing don’t have time to grumble but invent things.

“But when you have nothing to offer, you gossip and complain to cover things. The vehicles are 99.9 percent owned by government and 0.1 percent [owned] by the appointees and if you are leaving government, you will give us the vehicles.

“I cannot be giving new vehicles every four years. Our people are suffering and need our attention as their population gives us the little we have”.

The governor called on leaders in the state to make sacrifices as there were people in the state who could not feed properly.

Kenneth Ugbala, secretary to the state government (SSG), thanked the governor for providing the vehicles.

Said Ugbala: “The vehicles would be distributed to some SSAs, SAs Permanent Secretaries, 13 coordinators of local government areas development centres, among others”.

    NCC Sues For Effective Telecoms Infrastructure Protection As AI Fuels Cyber Threats

    The need for stronger protection of telecommunications infrastructure, was Tuesday highlighted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) with a warning that the growing sophistication of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven cyber attacks pose increasing risks to Nigeria’s digital economy and national security.  Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, made this call at the second International Cybersecurity Conference (ICSC), held in Abuja.  Maida said telecommunications infrastructure had become central to Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting financial transactions, communications, public services and business operations, making its protection critical to national security.,  He said AI had significantly increased the sophistication, speed and scale of cyber attacks, requiring stronger digital defences, improved security infrastructure and closer collaboration among regulators, telecommunications operators and security agencies.  The conference was held under the theme, “Cyber Resilience in the Age of AI: Defending Minds, Networks and Nation”.  Maida said cyber resilience extended beyond preventing attacks to building the capacity to anticipate, withstand and recover from disruptions while ensuring the continuity of essential services and economic activities, was essential.  He identified emerging threats to include AI-driven phishing, automated credential attacks, deepfakes designed to bypass authentication systems and malware capable of modifying itself to evade detection.  He cited recent international cybersecurity incidents involving attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems in France and spyware targeting journalists and media personnel in the Middle East as examples underscoring the need for stronger digital defences.  Section 4 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, he said, mandates the Commission to protect consumer rights, safeguard national interests and promote the safety and efficiency of communications infrastructure.  To strengthen the sector’s response, Maida said the NCC had established its Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) to monitor threats, facilitate intelligence-sharing and coordinate responses to cybersecurity incidents across the telecommunications sector.  He added that the Commission’s cyber resilience framework for the Nigerian communications sector provided common security standards for licensed operators and strengthened coordination with the national Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT).  Maida identified three critical areas for strengthening cyber resilience: raising cybersecurity awareness to protect human minds, securing networks through robust security architecture, and promoting national defence through collaboration among regulators, telecommunications operators, financial institutions and security agencies.  He urged telecommunications operators to adopt Zero Trust Architecture, which requires continuous verification of users and systems, and to assess AI models integrated into network operations regularly for vulnerabilities.  The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, said digital development and national security could no longer be treated as separate priorities.  Ribadu, who was represented by Prof. Gerald Ilukwe of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), said AI offered opportunities to strengthen cyber defences but could also enable criminals  develop sophisticated scams, clone voices and spread false information.  He urged Nigerians to verify identities and authenticate suspicious requests before taking action. ...

    Israel: Netanyahu Faces Eisenkot Challenge In Pivotal Election As Citizens Vote

    Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu casts his ballot, alongside his wife Sara, at a polling station in Jerusalem, Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Tuesday cast his ballot in Jerusalem, urging Israelis to vote “the right way” in a pivotal election.  For the first time since Hamas’s October 7 attack, voters are judging Netanyahu’s leadership after three years of regional war, deepening divisions and mounting questions over security.  Turnout reached 16.68 percent in the first three hours, the highest at that stage since 1981.  Meanwhile, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot met voters in Nir Oz, including former hostage, Gadi Moses. The southern community was among those attacked by Hamas-led fighters on October 7, 2023.  Eisenkot pledged to dismantle Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, promising to bring “a different spirit” to Israel. He also vowed to establish a state commission of inquiry into the security failures surrounding the attack, something Netanyahu’s government has resisted.  In Jerusalem, some voters demanded accountability and a change of government. Others said they continued to trust Netanyahu to protect the country.  With security, accountability and national unity dominating the campaign, Israelis cast their ballots in an election that could shape the country’s political future.
