Don Media Group Fires Back @ Otti ‘Hatchet Job’ Allegations…’Journalism Not Endorsement Ceremony’

Don Media Group has issued a forceful defense of its editorial independence, dismissing claims that a recent inquiry directed at Governor Alex Chioma Otti of Abia State, was a politically motivated “hatchet job”.

The controversy stemmed from a question posed by Don FM journalist, Mr. Chika Nwabueze, during a high-profile media chat with the Governor. Following the session, critics suggested the line of questioning was sponsored by outside interests or influenced by the media house’s leadership.

In a statement released Saturday by Managing-Director, Alozie Uzoukwu, the group maintained that the question was a legitimate pursuit of accountability.

Stated Uzoukwu: “The question posed was professional and fully consistent with the constitutional responsibility of the media to seek clarification on the impact of government policies. This is the essence of accountability journalism and the very purpose of a media chat”.

The group specifically addressed attempts to link the reporter’s conduct to the political or philanthropic affiliations of its Chairman, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, or the City Boy Movement.

Don Media Group asserted its absolute editorial independence, maintaining that the professional autonomy of its journalists must remain shielded from ownership affiliations or the weaponisation of civic movements.

The group noted that media chats should be arenas for transparency rather than “endorsement ceremonies”.

Further read the statement: “Journalists must be able to ask questions freely without fear of political misinterpretation”.

Don Media Group reaffirmed its commitment to reporting “without fear or favour”, signaling that they would not be intimidated by political blowback as they continue to monitor the impact of government projects on the citizenry.
