The lives of at least 21 Kano State athletes were lost in a tragic road accident in Kura Local Government Area of the State has claimed as the delegation was returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
The victims, who included officials, were travelling in one of the vehicles transporting the team back from Ogun State, where the sports event had just ended.
The accident happened around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday when their bus fell off a bridge near Dakstalle town, located about 50 kilometres from Kano.
The vehicle involved was carrying about 35 people and was the last in a convoy of eight buses bringing the team home.
One of the survivors, Ado Salisu, shared his experience, explaining that the team had been on the road since Thursday night.
Said Salisu: “The Kano State contingents travelled with about eight vehicles, and the bus that was involved in the accident was the last bus”.
Several injured passengers were rushed to the Kura General Hospital for immediate medical care.
The National Sports Festival, which started on May 18, ended on Thursday in Ogun State. Team Delta was crowned the overall winner of the competition.
