Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.
Democracy was on last Sunday described as a “dictatorship of the majority”. Chris Oyakhilome, president and founder of Loveworld Incorporated, better known as Christ Embassy, gave this description while speaking at the Church’s communion service on.
The pastor said democracy sidelined the minority, adding that the United States was not a democratic state but a constitutional republic.
Oyakhilome said the founding fathers of the U.S. recognised this deficiency from the outset and created a system that catered to the majority and minority.
Said he: “The simple definition of a democracy is the government of the majority. But when you look at it more closely, it is a dictatorship of the majority, which means the majority handpicked their leaders and the leaders do what the majority says.
“The minority has no voice, so there again is the totalitarianism by the majority but that is not what you want.
“Remember the majority crucified Jesus, they called for his death. Were they right? No, they were wrong. They made wrong claims.
“So when we say ‘the majority is always right’, the majority is not always right. You read through the bible and find that they were wrong most of the time.
“And that is why the founding fathers of the United States had the wisdom to have a two-way system for their election. They have the majority and then they have the electoral college.
“Why? Because it is not a democracy, it is a constitutional republic. So the constitution they have agreed to protect the majority and the minority”.
