The Federal Government on Friday offered an increase of N62,000.00 from N60,000.00 as its new minimum wage for workers.

The figure was arrived at on Friday during a meeting between the Federal Government representatives and labour leaders called to deliberate on the new minimum wage.

The organised labour, it is understood, on the other hand, has proposed a N250,000 minimum wage.

Earlier, after a meeting, Hope Uzodinma, Imo State governor, said the tripartite committee on the minimum wage was close to reaching a consensus.

The governor said he was confident that a concrete agreement would be reached “in a few minutes”.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Monday, embarked on an indefinite strike over the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demand for a new minimum wage.

Organised labour, on Tuesday, relaxed the industrial action for one week to allow negotiations with the Federal Government on a new minimum wage.

The negotiations resumed on Thursday.

Labour had proposed N615,500.00 and N494,000.00 as the new national minimum wage, which the government said was unrealistic.

Governors under the aegis of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) have meanwhile, said the N60,000.00 minimum wage for workers is not sustainable.
