Dr. Alex Otti, Abia state Governor, has assured the family of Chris Mba, the Abia-born music act whose demise occured on May 3, 2023, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, State Government’s support.

The Governor’s pledge was conveyed via a video message to the audience at Special Red Carpet Tribute Night to celebrate the life of the late Chris Mba which held at the magnificent COSON House in Ikeja, Lagos on Friday, August 18, 2023.

In the video message, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Entertainment, Martins Okechukwu Justice, popularly known in the entertainment industry as J. Martins, described Chris Mba as an Illustrious son of Abia State, and an Icon in the music industry.

The Red-Carpet Tribute Night was an unforgettable event with a unique multimedia presentation titled ‘The Life And Times Of Chris Mba’, which was anchored by COSON’s Snr. Communication Executive, Mandu Uwem Umoh. There was a lot of great live music and dancing.

Present at the tribute night were prominent members of the music industry, friends and family members of the departed artiste such as Mr. Collins Enebeli, father of hitmaker, Don Jazzy; Mike Odiong, CEO of Premier Records, Nigeria’s frontline recording company on whose label, Chris Mba released much of his memorable songs; Alex ‘O’, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated pop singers of a generation; Cordelia Okpei, retired G-M of FRCN’s flagship station, Metro FM; reggae toaster extra-ordinaire, King Wadada; eminent broadcaster, Godwin Asuquo; celebrated airline captain, Emma Anyanwu, who himself is a famed guitarist and almost every member of the COSON Board including renowned gospel music minister, Kenny Saint Best (KSB).

Others in attendance were, famed music maker, Righeousman Erhabour; master of impressions, Koffi Da Guru, celebrated drummer, Richard Cole; gospel minister, Evangelist Olusegun Omoyayi, President of Music Producers & Marketing Association of Nigeria (MUPMAN), Sharon Esco Wilson and COSON General Manager, Mrs. Bernice Eriemeghe- Ashibuogwu.

At the event, a minute silence was observed in honour of four frontline musicians who passed on in recent times: Chris Mba who died on May 3; Mike Appoh (Micro Mike) of the defunct Jazz Basin who died in London on July 15; Basil Akalonu (Bazzy Cole) of Sweet Breeze who died in the 2nd week of August and Prince B of Jambos Express who died on August 16.

There was also a presentation of a special recognition plaque celebrating the life of Chris Mba’ to his widow, Ada Chris Mba, who graced the event with her children, Unique, Onyi, Naomi and Favour.

Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Chief Tony Okoroji, who coordinated the event, thanked all the people who contributed to making the Red Carpet Tribute Night in honour of Chris Mba, an unforgettable event.
