Burns Boy with Angelique Kidjo

Those who criticise Burna Boy over his personality have come under fire as Angelique Kidjo, Grammy-winning Beninese singer-songwriter, lashed out at them while recently speaking about her music and people’s perception of the”African Giant”.

The 60-year-old songstress spoke while responding to questions in an interview on Smooth FM Lagos.

Burna Boy has been the subject of heated argument on numerous occasions as his critics often fault his seemingly “unapologetic nature” to issues.

During the interview, Kidjo however, said criticisms of the ‘Ye’ singer were often baseless, noting that people should not be attacked for standing their ground on issues, pointing out that the ‘Wonderful’ singer would not have been criticised in similar manner if he was an African-American.

Said Kidjo: “That’s the way to to do it (referring to Burna Boy’s attitude), because he knows what he is talking about. When you’re talented, yes, you have to have humility but that doesn’t mean you’re going to walk on yourself and apologise.

“For what? I’m good at what I do. You don’t like it? Sorry! If it was an African-American person having that attitude, nobody would say anything. That’s my boy mehn! Let him do his stuff. If you don’t like it, sorry for you… You leave my boy alone!”

With numerous awards and recognition, Kidjo and Burna have pulled their weight in the global music landscape.

Both singers have won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammys, with Burna Boy initially losing to the Beninoise music star in 2020.

The pair also recently collaborated on a song on ‘Mother Nature’, Kidjo’s latest album.
