Gov. Okezie Ipkeazu of Abia State

Three weeks after testing positive for COVID-19, Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has reportedly tested negative.

Although, information of his testing negative was sketchy at the time of filing this report, the State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu in a two-paragraph press release confirmed that his principal tested negative on Friday.

Read the statement: “To the glory of God, repeat COVID-19 test conducted by Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on samples submitted by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday, 2nd July, 2020, returned negative result on Friday, 3rd July, 2020.

“Governor Ikpeazu is therefore deemed free of the virus according to the extant guidelines of NCDC and the World Health Organization (WHO)”.

A video posted by a member of the Ikpeazu kitchen cabinet; Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr. which trended on Friday showed Ikpeazu in his Abuja residence playing table tennis with a family doctor.

The video presented the first time glimpse of the Abia State governor to the people of the state since he reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 on June 8.

Sources within the government circles revealed that the video which trended last week was targeted at replying some critics of the present administration in the state who had claimed that the governor was dead.

Investigation also showed that the state of the governor’s health had been a source of worry for his supporters and Abians in general since he tested positive for COVID-19.

Though the governor was said to have formally handed over to his deputy, Rt. Hon. Udo Okochukwu, sources within the Government House said that governance has been grounded to a halt as there were limits to the powers of the deputy governor.
