Substance suspected to be kerosene allegedly adulterated by a local vendor caused explosions in various homes, leaving two persons with high degree burn in Anambra State.
The incident which occured in Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area saw two women, Roseline Onwuka of Ozala village Isuofia and Ebere Ibejiekwe of Isiaku village Isuofia receiving burns.
The Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident, saying that the kerosene vendor had been arrested.
Reports revealed that the explosion happened after the two women bought the kerosene which they used in their stoves and lanterns respectively.
Said s source: “A heavy explosion occurred immediately the women used it in their separate homes, destroying the stoves and lanterns, and also part of the houses, then causing burns to the two women”.
Said Haruna: “On the 19/2/2020 at about 5:45 pm, there was a report at Igboukwu Division that between 12th and 13th February 2020, one Roseline Onwuka ‘f’ of Ozala village Isuofia and Ebere Ibejiekwe ‘f’ of Isiaku village Isuofia bought kerosene suspected to be adulterated from one Chidiebere Umeobi, a Kerosene seller at Nkwor Igboukwu Market.
“They took the kerosene to their various houses, it caused explosion when they used it in their lanterns and stoves respectively. As a result, both Mrs Roseline Onwuka and Ebere Ibejiekwe sustained varying degrees of burns all over their bodies while parts of their houses were also gutted by fire which emanated from the explosion”.
He said both victims were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, and that the kerosene seller had been arrested.
Said he: “The suspect has been arrested while samples of the kerosene were collected and taken to DPR for analysis. The case is under investigation”.
