As part of the 2017 World Decent Work Day, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Friday, picketed the corporate headquarters of MTN Nigeria in Abuja as well as Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).

Some of the placards displayed by hundreds of workers led by Ayuba Wabba, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) read: “CEO pay is 997% since 1978, end corporate greed, Africa needs a pay rise,” “Unionization is a right not privilege,” “NLC will not rest until new minimum wage is paid,” “Decent work not negotiable,” “Fight corruption, pay decent wage,” “We demand new minimum wage now,” “The minimum wage in Nigeria is not enough to live a decent life,” “Workers in Africa are struggling to survive on low wages,” “If we end corporate greed, we can improve their lives,” among others.

Wabba who led the picketing exercise, stressed the need for both public and private employers of labour to provide better working conditions for employees across the country.

Speaking at the AEPB, Wabba said “We have identified two organisations, Abuja Environmental Protection Board where casualization has been on and workers have been denied the rights to unionise among
other issues.

“Secondly is the notorious MTN which all of us are aware of. Every three months they sack the workers and give them a new contract. This is not acceptable, our laws do not accept that, and those workers need to be liberated.

“We need to tell them that they need to respect international labour laws, they need to also respect our own labour laws but importantly, they must respect human and trade union rights.

“Workers have dignity, workers are not slaves and therefore, all workers must be treated with the workers best of attention.

“Injury to one is injury to all. Injury to the workers at MTN and AEPB is an injury to all Nigerian workers. Issues of minimum wage must be attended to within minimum time, we are running out of time,” he stressed.
